 Nqpetro recently completed a comprehensive upgrade at a fuel station in Rasmussen, QLD, bringing it up to global Underground Storage Tank System (USTS) standards. Led by our dedicated project manager, Matt Logan, this fuel management solution aimed to mitigate environmental and operational risks by transforming the site’s existing single-wall steel tanks into double-wall, relined tanks with an interstitial space for enhanced integrity monitoring.

Upgrading a generator fuelling system is never a simple task, but when the project is located in the heart of Brisbane's CBD, it adds an extra layer of complexity. At Nqpetro, we recently undertook the replacement of an underground diesel tank for a new generator system in Brisbane City—a project that tested our team's ability to manage tight spaces, limited access, and precise scheduling.

Meeting the Challenge Head-On

Working within the Brisbane CBD posed significant challenges. The tight space in the loading dock where the tank was located required meticulous planning and coordination with multiple trades. Limited parking and access further complicated the logistics, making contractor management crucial to keeping the project on schedule. Additionally, the existing fittings were old copper, requiring the expertise of specialist plumbers to integrate the new pipework. Height restrictions in the area also required the use of a specialised small crane to position the new tank correctly.

Project Deliverables

Onsite inspection and pumping out of 5000L of oily water.

Surveying the site before cutting concrete.

Excavation of the tank area, removal of the old tank, and pipework.

Safe disposal of the old tank and preparation of the site for the new installation.

Installation of new anchors, the new tank, and connection of all pipework and electrical ATG system.

Pre-burial testing.

Backfilling of the tank farm and laying of new concrete.

Final site cleanup and demobilisation.

Commissioning of Complete Fuel and ATG Systems, Including Vapour Recovery Stage 2: We oversaw the commissioning of both the fuel and Automatic Tank Gauging (ATG) systems, ensuring they were fully operational. The inclusion of Vapour Recovery Stage 2 technology further enhances the site's environmental compliance by capturing fuel vapours during refuelling.

Our journey with Spark NEL began with a unique challenge: the efficient refuelling of tunnelling vehicles and machinery within the constraints of an underground environment. These vehicles and machinery require constant refuelling to maintain uninterrupted operations, making it crucial to implement a reliable and safe solution. To address this, Nqpetro supplied a range of high-capacity refuelling tanks, specifically designed to meet the demands of this project. This included:

12 x Bloc 1,000L 12V self-bunded refuelling tanks: Perfectly suited for the tight spaces of underground environments, these tanks provide safe and efficient fuel storage with built-in bunding to prevent leaks and spills.

4 x Grande 12,000L 240V dispensing self-bunded bulk tanks: These large-capacity tanks ensure a steady supply of fuel, supporting both underground and aboveground operations. Their robust design and self-bunding feature guarantee maximum safety and reliability.

Advanced Fuel Management

Our tanks are equipped with SmartFill's Gen. 3 fuel management system, a cutting-edge solution for precise fuel tracking and management. •Thermal relief mechanisms

EXPERT INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING: During the commissioning phase, our skilled technicians demonstrated their expertise by installing tank stands fabricated to dumpy-level measurements, ensuring precise tank levelling. A specialised TRAP breather vent was also installed to safeguard against atmospheric water and condensation, preserving lubricant integrity.

PERFORMANCE VALIDATION: Through extensive testing, our system achieved impressive operational metrics:

•Unloading speeds of 450 litres per minute (LPM)
•Loading speeds of 400 LPM

These results showcase the efficiency and reliability of our solution, confirming its capability to meet rigorous operational demands.

Nqpetro is proud to announce the successful conclusion of the BP Stapylton Tank Replacement project, which involved the removal and replacement of the service station’s underground petroleum storage system (UPSS), bringing the site in line with modern regulations. This comprehensive upgrade encompassed civil demolition works, decommissioning of existing fuel infrastructure, sheet piling, fuel tank installation, forecourt capture system installation, underground fuel pipework installation, hazardous area electrical upgrades, and fuel equipment supply, installation, and commissioning.

KEY PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF EXISTING UNDERGROUND TANKS: We successfully removed and replaced four existing double-wall fibreglass tanks, upgrading the underground petroleum storage system (UPSS) at the service station to enhance safety and efficiency.

SHEET PILING FOR TANK FARM: Implemented sheet piling techniques to secure and reinforce the tank farm area, ensuring stability and safety during construction activities.

INSTALLATION OF CAR AND TRUCK CANOPY PIPEWORK: Efficiently installed pipework for car and truck canopies, facilitating seamless fuel delivery and enhancing customer experience at the service station.

HAZARDOUS AREA ELECTRICAL UPGRADES: Performed hazardous area electrical upgrades to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations, prioritising site personnel's and customers' well-being.

INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE: Successfully integrated new fuel pipework within existing conduit systems mounted under a suspended concrete slab, optimising space utilisation and minimising disruption to site operations.

PROJECT DELIVERY
